第四节 并列连词
【名师指津】 when可用作并列连词,相当于and at this/that time,意为“正在这/那时;突然”,常用于下列句式:sb be about to do/going to do/on the point of doing sth when...(某人正要做某事,突然……);sb be doing sth when...(某人正在做某事,突然……);sb had just done sth when...(某人刚做完某事,突然……)。
He was about to go out when the telephone rang.
他正要出去时,电话铃响了。
He had just finished writing a report when the boss let him type a letter.
他刚写完一篇报告,老板就让他打一封信。
 单句语法填空
1.(2022·厦门外国语期末)Boxing Day is a National Bank Holiday,a chance to eat your leftovers and watch TV,and the actual traditions go back much further and are steeped (充满……的) in history.
2.(2022·苏州八校三模)“Children did not create this conflict, but they are its greatest victims,” said Alanoud Alzaid, the group’s president, who gave the opening speech at the dinner.

【规律方法】
1.分析句子成分
如果设空处前后两部分都有独立的主谓结构(或有祈使句),前后两部分又不缺少句子成分,且前后两部分不存在从属关系,则设空处一定填并列连词。
【典例】 The data is based on more than 491,000 older adults who used home care between 2007 and 2013________is focused on people who are likely to die within the next five years.
解析 句意:这个数据是基于2007年至2013年使用家庭护理的超过491 000个老年人并关注了那些极有可能5年之内死去的人。设空处前后两部分是并列的谓语is based on和is focused on,且此处表示并列关系,故填and。
答案 and
2.牢记固定搭配
有些句子中使用到的并列连词需要根据固定用法来确定。
【典例】 We were having a meeting ________ someone broke in.
解析 句意:我们正在开会,这时有人闯了进来。本句中用到了“be doing...when...”
的固定用法,因此应填when。
答案 when
